A second person died from a two-vehicle wreck on Highway 62/412 in Salem Sept. 13.
Albert A. Mefford, 85, died hours after being transported from the scene by Air Evac helicopter to St. John's Hospital in Springfield, said Salem Police Chief Al Roork.
Mefford's wife, 85-year-old Vera Mefford, was killed in the crash.
Roork said Mefford was pulling onto Highway 62/412 in front of the Salem Post Office when a 1991 Escort driven by Joanne French slammed into the driver's side of Mefford's vehicle.
The impact knocked Mefford's 1986 Dodge Aries into the westbound ditch, approximately 15 feet from the highway.
Roork said he thinks Vera Mefford died instantly from the impact. Fulton County deputy Coroner Rhonda Koelling pronounced Vera Mefford dead at the scene.
French, who is pregnant, was transported from the scene to the Fulton County Hospital.
Fulton County Hospital Administrator Frank Wise said French was treated and released.
Roork said the wreck was caused by Mefford when he pulled into oncoming traffic.
"I don't think there's any point in filing misdemeanor traffic citations against someone who has passed away," Roork said.
Burial was at Howell Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc., West Plains.
