Franz receives research award

Thursday, August 14, 2003

THAYER -- Justin Franz, a second year student in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, recently received an award for the cancer research he conducted as a participant in the Partners in Research (PIR) Program.

This was a 10-week program offered by the Arkansas Cancer Research Center at UMAS and gives medical, pharmacy and undergraduate students the opportunity to learn about cancer research, patient care and education. The students attended weekly lectures by the research center faculty and shadowed clinicians to learn first hand how physicians interact with patients. They also work in labs alongside basic scientists to conduct research in ongoing research center studies. At the end of the program the students present their research findings at a scientific symposium.

Franz was one of 28 students in the 2003 PIR Program. In his category (medical student) there were 17 students. He was named second runner-up in the medial student category. Three judges, two local and one from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, judged the research programs. Franz's program was on optical research.

He is a 1997 graduate of Thayer High School and a 2001 graduate of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark. He is the son of Bill and Donna Franz of Thayer.
