Aletha Bilstad Hale, age 88, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Cherokee Village, died May 30, 2005, at the Quince Nursing Home in Memphis.

She was born Feb. 7, 1917 in Texas. She was a talented artist, taking up painting while living on the Island of Kauii, Hawaii, and Pebble Beach, Calif. She designed houses, which she and her husband built in Pebble Beach, Carmel and Monterey Valley, Calif.

She moved to Cherokee Village in 1982 and designed a house built on Lake Thunderbird. She and her husband, Herbert Hale, moved to Memphis in 2002. She was a member of the Colonial Methodist Church in Memphis.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert Hale of the home; one brother, Benny Stroud; two sisters -- Ruby Ericson of Memphis and Mabel Cooper of Fort Worth, Texas; two granddaughters _ Elyce Bruijnes of Amsterdam, Holland and Tessa McCuen of Alphariapa, Ga.; two great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Lillie May Stroud.; her first husband, Herb Bilstad; one daughter, Peggy Zacheris; and two sisters.

The funeral service was June 2 at Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel in Highland with Rev. Kay Wiggins officiating. Burial followed in the Oaklawn Cemetery at Cherokee Village with arrangements under the direction of Tri-County';s Cherokee Chapel of Highland.
