OREGON COUNTY -- Officials with the Thayer rural and city fire departments were notified recently that their fire departments will receive $21,400 each. The funds will be issued through the State Emergency Management Agency as part of the Homeland Security Grant program for 2004.

Thayer Assistant Fire Chief Mark Arnold was in West Plains Sept. 20 to attend a state Homeland Security grant workshop at West Plains Civic Center. The workshop was held in conjunction with the grant program and was mandatory to receive grant funds.

SEMA director Jerry Uhlmann said the state received notice in March it would receive $42.2 million to be dispersed in three categories: city/county, volunteer fire departments, fire protection district and law enforcement terrorism protection plan.

All applicants were to request items pertaining to homeland security and emergency response issues. These items were selected from a list provided by SEMA.

The Thayer Fire Departments asked for self contained breathing apparatuses that will last one hour and gas meters that measure combustible and hazardous gas.
