Youth can make a difference Couch students bring home a gold medal

Thursday, September 18, 2003

COUCH SCHOOL -- Educators, students and parents in the Couch School District walked a little taller when two of their own brought home a gold medal from the National Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Conference held in Philadelphia.Darron Combs and Doug Melton presented an illustrated talk on the danger of alcohol and drug abuse. Their FCCLA instructor is Teresa Holder. There were 14 categories in which the students could compete. The students first had to win local, district, region and state competitions before receiving the honor to travel to the national finals. Both Combs and Melton agree the reason for choosing the issue they did was because it is a serious matter that has an impact on families and communities. The Couch students said the project taught them a great deal about organizing and presenting information to others and that youth can make a difference. They said they are proud of their success.
