Izard spelling bee slated

Thursday, February 3, 2005

The annual Izard County Spelling Bee will be held Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Miller Auditorium in Melbourne.

The national Spelling Bee is an educational event sponsored by Scripps Howard newspapers and other leading newspapers throughout the U.S. It is designed to help students increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.

The Spelling Bee begins at the county level for fourth through eighth grade students. The winner of the Izard County Spelling Bee will go to the State Spelling Bee in Little Rock on March 12. The winner of the state bee will go to Washington, D.C.

The Izard County Spelling Bee Committee encourages residents and businesses to participate in the Izard County Spelling Bee by donating cash prizes for the winners. The committee hopes that the continuing support of this annual event will encourage students in the quest for excellence in education.

Cash prizes may be sent to: Izard County Consolidated School, c/o Donna Ford, P.O. Box 115, Brockwell, AR 72517. For more information, call Judy Eldridge at 870-297-8533.
