Classes set to help diabetics choose meals

OREGON COUNTY -- The Oregon County Health Department in conjunction with University Extension will offer special classes to help those with diabetes choose and prepare meals. The classes will be held at the Alton Senior Center 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 16, 23 and March 2.

The health department offers several services to the residents of the county. Health Department Director Shiela Russell said one service offered by her department includes educating people with diagnosed conditions about eating properly.

Russell said the series called "Dining with Diabetes" is a three-class series designed to teach about healthy food choices for people with diabetes, healthy versions of familiar foods that are easy to prepare and cooking techniques that use new or more healthful ingredients.

A registered dietician from Ozarks Medical Center will be at the classes to offer additional information. "This program is not intended to provide individualized meal plans for participants nor is it meant to replace diabetes education that is provided by qualified health professionals," said Brenda Bell, human development specialist with University Extension. She said, "Instead it is intended to help people with diabetes learn more about eating a healthy diet, and how to make better use of artificial sweeteners, low fat products and herbs and spices," Bell said.

Russell said there is no cost for the Dining with Diabetes classes. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Those planning to attend need to respond by Feb. 11 and may do so by contacting Russell at the Howell County University Extension Office at 417-256-2391. The office is located at 217 S. Aid Avenue in West Plains.
