Work to begin on new school at Thayer

Thursday, July 17, 2003

THAYER -- The site is ready. It is level and has been tested.

Thayer Superintendent Bill Garrison said the construction of the new Thayer Elementary School could begin as early as the end of this week.

General contractor Travis Snelling from Forsyth, Mo., was hired June 30 as the contractor for the project. The final plans for the building project were finalized at the July 10 Thayer School Board meeting.

Garrison said the 61,460- square-foot building will be pre-cast concrete.

The superintendent said there will be three classrooms per grade, a special education room, a counselor's office, art and music rooms, a cafeteria and lunchroom area, and a gym.

"The front of the building will be facing Highway 142. It will be two levels with both levels having ground accessibility," the superintendent said.

The completion date for the project is August 2004.

The building bond issue was passed by Thayer school patrons in November 2002 after several years of the issue being placed on the ballot.

The school bonds were sold by March of this year and have been in the bank drawing interest while the plans were finalized.

Garrison said he was anxious to get the construction phase of the program under way.
