Maxie Mae Rains, 79, of Viola, daughter of Herman and Ethel Crawford Bales, was born Sept. 18, 1924, in Pickren Hall, Ark. She died Jan. 10, 2004, at her home in Viola.

She married Theodore Dillinger Nov. 7, 1940, at Salem. To this union three children were born. He preceded her in death and she married W.E. Rains in April of 1983. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Walter Dillinger and wife, Judy, of Viola; and a daughter, Grace Brown and husband Robert, of Viola; brothers -- Bo Bales of Durant, Okla., Ranzy Bales of Gepp, Eugene Bales of Bakersfield, Mo., and Rufus Bales of Blue Springs, Mo.; sisters -- Ruth Morris of Bakersifeld, Mo., Wanda Griggs of of Jonesboro, and Shirley Brown of Springfield, Mo.; grandchildren -- Larry, Randy, Teddy, Mike and Marty Dillinger, Tammy Miller, Sheila Fry and Terry and Dean Brown; and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; a son, J.T. "Tommy" Dillinger; a step-son, Don Rains; brothers -- Thelmer and Shelby Bales; sister, Barbara Deatherage; and her father and mother.

The funeral was Jan. 13 at Cox-Blevins Chapel in Salem. Burial was at Viola Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem.
