JEFFERSON CITY -- Beginning Jan. 1 Missouri Korean War veterans could begin applying to receive the Korean War medal, medallion and certificate.
The program was created last fall by legislation and was modeled after the successful World War II Veterans Award Recognition program. Over 41,500 Missouri residents have been recognized through this program.
The Missouri Veterans Commission and the Missouri National Guard will be announcing the design for the medallion in the coming weeks. The medals are expected to be minted and available for distribution in March.
To be eligible for the medal. Oregon County residents must be a Korean War veteran and have served in active duty in a U.S. military force anytime during the period of June 27, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. Applicants must have been honorably separated or discharged from military service unless they are still in active military service, according to the legislation. Korean War veterans or the spouse or the oldest living survivor of the deceased veteran may apply for the award.
The application process will end Nov. 1, 2005.
