Marie Helm Walling, 86, of Salem, Ark., daughter of the late Walter and Susie Lawson Helm was born Aug. 3, 1917, in Oxford, Ark. she died Jan. 25, 2004, at Salem, Ark.
She married James Donald Walling on July 17, 1942, at Byron, Ark., and to this union a son was born. She spent her working years as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, homemaker and a teacher, as she taught for five years just before all one-room schools consolidated. she was a member of Byron Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, James Donald Walling of Salem; a son, Jim Walling, and his wife, Shirley, of Salem; two grandchildren -- Melissa Morrison and her husband, Kendall, of Melbourne, Ark., and Chad Walling and wife, Andrea, of Salem; and a granddaughter, Rory Walling of Salem.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers -- Hershel, Arlun and Hayden Helm; and two sisters -- Ruby Speak and Mabel Mason.
The funeral was Jan. 26 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel in Salem with Bruce Cochran, Ralph Moore and Eric Lewis officiating. Burial was in Byron Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Barker Funeral Home of Salem, Ark.
Pallbearers were Charles Cochran, Pete Lewis, Tom Newman, Donnie Foster, Bob Bassham and Jeff Barnett.
Memorials preferred to the Paragould Children's Home, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Arkansas Children's Hospital.
