Alton Coles, 84, of Batesville, died Jan. 23, 2004, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born Dec. 27, 1919, at Sandtown, Ark., he was the son of William Thomas and Annie Gaines Coles.
He was a retired planer operator for Highway Lumber Company in Batesville and was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Batesville.
Survivors include three daughters -- Sue Fulbright of Cashman, Linda Chavers of Batesville, and Tonie Norris of Cave City; four brothers -- Doyle Coles, Coy Coles, Elisha Coles and LaVaughn Coles, all of Batesville; two sisters -- Mary Ann Matthews of Cave City and Winnie Grace Johnson of Batesville; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 20 step-great-grandchilden; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby Estella Coles; a daughter, Tracy Lee Haughom; six brothers -- Preston Coles Conway Coles, Albert Coles, Albro Coles, Alvin Coles, and Troy Coles; a great-granddaughter, Tracy Huckabee; and a great-grandson, Aaron Huckabee.
The funeral was Jan. 26 at First Free Will Bapist Church in Batesville with Rev. Bobby Shepherd officiating. Burial followed in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Batesville with arrangements under the direction of Qualls Batesville Funeral Service of Batesville, Ark.
