The Salem Greyhounds opened 2AA-North Conference play March 16 by playing host to the Calico Rock Pirates for a pair of five-inning games.

The squads split wins on the night, with the Pirates posting a 7-6 come-from-behind win in game one, and the Greyhounds responded by taking game two by a score of 5-3.

With the Hounds holding a 5-3 advantage in the bottom of the fourth in the first game, Calico Rock posted four runs in the top of the fifth and held Salem to one run in the bottom of the frame, as the Pirates picked up the victory.

Salem hurler Brandon Sisler saw the bases loaded with two outs in the fifth when the Pirates started their rally.

Sisler struck out two and walked two for the Greyhounds.

Travis Hamby dropped an infield dribbler that plated the first run of the inning.

Sisler then walked in a run by giving up a base-on-balls to Kyle Miller. Acie Beebe then smashed a hit through Sisler's legs, scoring one run. The ball was misplayed by Salem, bringing the fourth Pirate run of the frame home to give Calico Rock a 7-5 lead.

Salem got one run back in the home-half of the fifth on an RBI-single to center from Woody Harlow, but the Greyhounds came up short by a run.

Salem got on the board first by scoring two runs in the bottom of the opening inning.

Jake Bontrager and Harlow racked up an RBI each as the Greyhounds moved in front 2-0.

The Pirates struck for one run in the second on a run-scoring single from Beebe, and two more in the third on a two-run homer to the 330-mark in dead-center from Brian Fountain.

With the game knotted at 3-all after three, Salem regained the lead, 5-3, in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a solo homer by Ryan Yarnell, and a double to the gap in right field from Mike Innis that plated Nathan Criss.

This Greyhound lead proved to be short-lived as the Pirates rallied in the top of the fifth for the win.

Scottie Sanders earned the win for Calico Rock, fanning five while giving up six hits and three walks.

Buck Brandon led the Pirates at the plate with a double and two singles, while Fountain picked up two RBIs on his home run. Beebe logged two runs-batted-in on a pair of base hits, while Hamby added a hit, and Miller an RBI for Calico Rock.

Harlow brought in two runs on two hits, while Yarnell added a home run, and Innis posted a double and one RBI. Brett Sisler added two hits, and Jake Bontrager logged an RBI on a base hit.

There would be no Pirate game-winning rally in the nightcap, as Salem jumped on top right out of the gate and held serve for a two-run win.

Greyhound catcher Phillip Taylor kept the Pirates quiet on the base-paths, gunning down two would be stealers at second base in game number two.

Harlow earned the complete-game victory for Salem, giving up eight hits, while registering three Ks and surrendering two walks. Innis started the Greyhounds off in fine fashion with a lead-off triple, and then came around to score on a Calico Rock throwing error.

Harlow, helping his own cause, followed three batters later by jacking a two-run shot to the 336-mark in right-center, staking the Hounds to a quick 3-zip lead.

Salem made it 4-0 in the top of the third thanks to a run-scoring single up the middle by Criss.

Calico Rock posted its only runs of the game in the bottom of the third.

Sanders racked up a base hit that plated Josh Stowers and Brandon, before scoring himself.

With Sanders on third, Fountain hit a pitch back at Harlow on the mound. Sanders charged toward home, and was caught in a run-down.

Heading back to third base, Sanders was hit in the back with the ball, and he then came home as the ball rolled to Salem's dugout.

Holding a 4-3 lead after three, the Hounds tacked on one more run in the top of the fourth on a steal of home by Taylor.

This rounded out the scoring as Salem picked up one win out of the double-header.

Harlow's homer, double and two RBIs paced Salem at the plate. Innis added a triple, while Yarnell and Taylor posted a double apiece. Kyle Estes added a hit, with Criss singling and recording one RBI.

Sanders led the Pirates with three hits and two runs-batted-in, while Chris Turner, Fountain, Beebe, Brandon and Vredenburg added a hit each for Calico Rock.

The Pirates posted their first win of the season March 15 by hammering the visiting Norfork Panthers 14-2 in a run-ruled game.

Beebe jacked a grand slam on his way to six RBIs for Calico Rock.

Sanders added two hits and three runs-batted-in, part of 14 hits on the game for the Pirates. Jonathan Moss picked up a pair of RBIs for Calico Rock, who jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings. The Pirates crossed the plate 11 times in the third and fourth innings on their way to the big win.

Miller picked up the victory for the Pirates, giving up four Panther hits while striking out six and walking two.
