Verbal Baker, 86, of Alton, was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Thayer, Mo., the daughter of Otis Lee Harper and Mary Frances Bonds Harper. She died Oct. 7, 2004, in Thayer.
She was united in marriage July 2, 1938, in Alton to John A. Baker.
She was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother and was a wonderful cook. She was a cook for the Alton School District for many years, giving each student that special attention she thought was needed.
She was also employed by Don Simpson Hardware in Alton as a sales clerk for many years. She was a member of the Alton United Methodist Church and an active member of the United Methodist Women's Group.
Survivors include two sons -- George Baker and wife, Carolyn, of Alton, and Van Baker and wife, Pam, of Thayer; seven grandchildren -- Angie Smith and husband, Craig, of Potosi, Mo., Debbie Keith and husband, Greg, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., George Baker Jr. and wife, Beverly, of Hillsboro, Mo., Donna Blankenship and husband, Robbie, of Alton, John Baker and wife, Tammy, of Tennessee, Tracy Miller and husband, Frazier, of Springfield, Mo.; and Jason Baker of Thayer; six great-grandchildren -- Nicole, Justin, Matthew, Elizabeth, Josh, Melanie and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters -- Bernice Ryan and Opal Holman; one niece; and one nephew.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 10 at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, with Rev. David Scott officiating.
Burial was in Cave Springs Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home of Thayer, Mo.
