Former Thayer resident James Clayton "J.C." Cowles, 83, of Broken Arrow, Okla., died Sept. 26, 2004.
J.C. was born April 14, 1921, in Peckham, Okla., to Charles H. and Faye Cowles.
He attended school in Latham, Kan., where he received an award for 12 years of perfect attendance, never absent, never tardy.
He was married on Jan. 5, 1941, to Evelyn O. Snodgrass. Cowles started his career with Frisco Railroad in 1938, with the section gang.
At his retirement, April 13, 1981, he was superintendent of the Tulsa Region, with over 41 years of employment.
J.C. and Evelyn were members of Community Christian Church in Tulsa, Okla.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; his son, Jim, and wife, Mary, of Low Gap, N.C.; a daughter, Janelle, of Lee's Summit, Mo.; a daughter, Jackie and her husband, Jerry, of Republic, Mo.; seven grandchildren -- Jim, James, Stacey, David, Tommy, Sam and Savannah; three great-grandchildren -- Trevor, Tylor and Destney; a cousin, Frank Cowles; a nephew, Brad; and a niece, Serena.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Memorial services were held Sept. 29, at Community Christian Church in Tulsa with the Rev. Gery Kinder, the Rev. Leslie Dotson and Pastor Donna Colburn all officiating. Inurnment was in Floral Haven in Broken Arrow.
