Rev. Walter L. Simpson, 65, son of the late Thomas Ray and Lena A. Pigg Simpson was born March 22, 1939, in Greer, Mo., and died Aug. 12, 2004, in Springfield, Mo.
He was a lifetime resident of the Wilderness community and retired from the United States Forest Service after 29 years of service.
On July 3, 1965, he was ordained into the Freewill Baptist Ministry. He served as pastor in several churches in the southeast Missouri area, and served in the Cave Springs Association. He was a United States Army Veteran, a member of the American Fox Trotters Association and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
On Sep. 1, 1962, he married Frances Laura Johnson in Denver, Colo. She survives of Wilderness, Mo. To this union five children were born -- Leanda Warren and her husband, Mark, of Blue Springs, Mo., Kristy Fitchpatric and her husband, Cliff, of Pierce City, Mo., Donnita Bennett and her husband, Mike, of Wentzville, Mo., Stan Simpson and his wife, Amy, of Rogers, Ark., Tammy Miller and her husband, David, of Aurora, Mo. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; three brothers -- Finis Simpson of Farmington, Mo. and Earl Simpson and Virgil Simpson, both of Wilderness; and two sisters -- Marie Crocker and Louise Guinn of Arnold.
The funeral was Aug. 15 at Wilderness Freewill Baptist Church with burial in the Wilderness Cemetery. The Rev. Glen Murray of West Plains, officiated.
Pallbearers were Dale Smallwood, Leo Warren, Bill Burkhead, David Bennett, Eugene Johnson and Howard Dethrow.
He was preceded in death by two brothers -- Richard Simpson and Eddie Simpson and a sister, Annie Lee Ogden.
