School considers purchase of mobile homes

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

MAMMOTH SPRING -- The Mammoth Spring School Board met in regular session Nov. 13.

Superintendent Ron Taylor and principals Brian Davis and Wade Powell gave the board an up-date on the recent On-Site Standards Review by the Arkansas State School Board Association.

"This is a three-year cycle the state has. The state is divided into different sections and every three years the state reviews alternating school districts in the state,"Taylor said.

The Mammoth Spring School District was last reviewed in 2004.

Taylor said state officials were at the school Nov. 6. and the school district should receive word in 30 days if the district passed the review.

"The state officials that were here said everything looked in excellent shape and both principals should be commended. We had 147 items, everything from teacher certification to classroom size reviewed. The 147 folders filled up two milk crates," Taylor said.

The school board voted to authorize the superintendent to look into purchasing two 14-feet by 63-feet mobile homes being stored in Little Rock.

"The mobile homes were purchased by the federal government for Hurricane Katrina victims and never used," Taylor told the board. He told the board he thinks the cost of the mobile homes are $4,500, plus the cost of moving them to Mammoth Spring. No decision was made about the purchase of the mobile homes.

The board voted to send Donnell Russell to the Arkansas School Board Association Delegate Assembly in December as a representative of the Mammoth Spring School District.

The board also voted to appoint Davis and school board member Jamie Turnbough to look into purchasing surveillance cameras for the school which will be placed inside and outside the school.
