Community comes together to benefit husband and wife with cancer

We have just completed a very successful benefit dinner for Sgt. Judy Schaufler of the Horseshoe Bend Police Department and Deputy Brad Schaufler of the Fulton County Sheriff's Department. This barbecue dinner was held to raise funds to pay some of the medical bills they have both incurred for treatment of cancer.

The fund-raiser could not have been done without the generous donations of many people. We served almost 400 dinners and thank everyone who purchased a ticket. We would also like to recognize the following businesses: Ron's Find Foods, and Steve's Meat for donating the meat; Uncle Don's BBQ for cooking the meat; Karen's Kitchen for the potato salad and slaw; employees of Dollar General Store in Horseshoe Bend for paper products; Wal-Mart, Town & Country and Price Chopper for paper products; Sue Legg for hamburger buns.

We also thank the following for cash donations: Scenic Realty, Carriage Trade Realty, Bob's Auto Repair, Market Street Pharmacy, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Horseshoe Bend Chamber of Commerce, Hill High Resort and Carriage Room, Crown Point Timeshares, Knights of Columbus, Dale Baugh and Richard Baugh Construction Co., Bookout Excavating, IESI.

We thank Areawide Media, Pacesetting Times, White River Current, Melbourne Times and KSAR for newspaper space and air time to promote the event. We thank St. Mary of the Mount Catholic Church for use of their fellowship hall. We thank the volunteers who worked on the project and helped serve and clean up. We thank Gil Ultsch, Tom Machado and Debbie Hobbs for sharing their musical talents.

With all the donations, combined with matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Modern Woodmen of America, we were able to raise $10,000 for Brad and Judy.May God bless each of you. Please remember Brad and Judy in your prayers.
