14-year-old taken into custody in connection to abuse of 11-year-old

A Melbourne woman was charged June 13 with permitting the abuse of a minor, a class B felony, after she allegedly allowed a 14-year-old boy to engage in sexual intercourse with an 11-year-old girl.

Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence said Amelia I. Peek, 28, gave the boy and girl alcohol and let them sleep together in her bed.

Lawrence said the 14-year-old boy is in custody and will be charged in juvenile court in connection with this incident.

The children are not related to Peek, Lawrence said.

Investigator Jannette Cooper, of the Arkansas State Police said the 11-year-old girl's mother gave her permission to stay at Peek's house the night of the incident.

Cooper said the girl called her boyfriend on the telephone and Peek let him stay the night with her.

Peek, a friend and the two children drank quantities of vodka and other alcoholic beverages before the two minors went into Peek's room, Cooper said.

According to the Izard County Clerk's Office, Peek told the girl not to have sex with her boyfriend.

Peek denied giving the juveniles alcohol, but admitted she was too intoxicated to know if they had consumed any, Cooper said.

The girl said she was intoxicated at the time of the sexual encounter, Cooper said.

Peek posted a $50,000 bond June 17. She is slated to appear in Izard County Circuit Court later this month.

If convicted, Peek could face up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
