National VP visits Alton FFA

Tuesday, October 2, 2007

ALTON -- The Alton Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter had a special guest visit their chapter Sept. 26.

Jennifer Himburg, FFA Southern Region national vice president, was in Alton for the Area 16 Leadership Conference and took time out to address the Alton FFA Chapter.

The chapter advisors are Mike Graham and Byron Rikard.

Graham said the Alton FFA Chapter has 90 members but their guest spoke to only first year members and FFA officers.

"It was a privilege to have a national officer visit our chapter," Graham said. He said there are over 400 FFA chapters in Missouri and over 500,000 FFA members nationwide.

Himburg, a graduate of Auburn University in Alabama, travels the region speaking to local FFA chapters.

"Our goal is to help the students develop leadership skills, communication skills and teamwork," she said.

Himburg told the students how much fun FFA can be and included several of the students in different exercises.

"Sometimes we find ourselves getting frustrated and tired, even in FFA. We need to try and be more positive. If you are having fun, your friends are going to see you are having fun and they may want to join FFA also," she told the students.

She told the group that being positive about FFA will encourage those around them to adopt the same attitude and will help them build a better local FFA chapter.

"Our goal as Alton FFA advisors is to teach the students how to learn life skill in the classroom to prepare them for life after high school," Graham said.

FFA officers this year at Alton are: Brittany Reihm, president; Casey Miller, vice president; Julie Lovelady, secretary; Stetson Neldon, treasurer; Lindsey Chronister, reporter; and Blake Orr, sentinel. Student assistants are: Lonnie Bradwell, Wess Buckner, Caleb Hamelton, Miranda Hollis and Jacob Marcum. Lonnie Bradwell serves as Area 16 president.
