AREA -- A public forum will be held at the South Central Ozark Council of Governments office Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. The meeting will be in the conference room. The SCOCOG office is located in the ODC Industrial Park at Pomona just off Highway 63 near the West Plains Municipal Airport.
The Delta Regional Authority has announced its 2005 grant funding program and timeline that includes the seven counties served by SCOCOG, including Oregon County.
Teresa Sigman of SCOCOG said the program focuses on transportation infrastructure, basic public information infrastructure, and workforce and business development with a special emphasis on distressed counties.
She said the overall goals and objectives are to find committed economic development projects, job retention projects and community development projects.
According to Oregon County Presiding Commissioner Leo Warren, the Delta Regional Authority, a federal program, formerly the Mississippi Delta Regional Authority, was established under the Clinton administration. He said millions of dollars was poured into the program to boost the economies in 20 some distressed states along and near the Mississippi River, including Missouri.
After President Bush took office, Warren said, funds to the program were cut drastically and regions were told to choose an agency or office in regional planning to help submit grants and implement programs. He said this is how SCOGOG became involved in the Delta Regional Authority.
