Charles Leon Faulkner Darneille of Salem died unexpectedly Feb. 4, 2005 at Ozark Medical Center in West Plains.

Born July 1, 1920, in Washington, D. C., he was the 10th child of Joseph A. Darneille and Evelyn L. Marschalk Darneille. He graduated from high school in Yonkers, N.Y., and attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., the University of Chicago and the University of Arizona. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a corpsman in Panama.

In 1972 he retired from the U.S. Postal Service, after serving as a letter carrier on Long Island, N.Y., and clerk on the mail trains and highway post offices throughout New England. He was predeceased by his first wife, Virginia I. Raith Darneille, in 1968.

He enjoyed life's simple pleasures like watching birds and walking with his grandchildren. He and Barbara, his wife of 35 years, made Salem their home after having traveled and lived for extended periods of time in Costa Rica, the Northwest and Portland, Maine, where they raised their family.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Plummer Darneille; a sister, Carolyn Searing of Allendale Park, Ohio; four daughters -- Daina R. Worthley of North Pole, Alaska, Carolanne Moring and husband, Perry, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Danielle M. Darneille of Fitchburg, Mass., Jeanine D. Swanson and husband, Gene, of South Portland, Maine; four sons -- John Guy Darneille and wife, Susan, of Millinocket, Maine, Edward Babb Darneille and wife, Susan, of Newton, N.H., Douglas Frederick Darneille of Boise, Idaho, and Charles Addison Darneille and wife, Claudia, of Porter, Maine; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in the spring at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
