Heavy rains caused a Fulton County deputy to drive off the road on the way to another accident July 10, according to authorities.
Fulton County Deputy Jason Martin, 30, of Salem wrecked his 2002 Ford Crown Victoria on the way to an accident on U.S. Highway 62/412 near Viola. The first accident involved Dean Mackley, 47, of Moselle, Miss.
Mackley was westbound on 62/412 when his 1993 Kenworth tractor trailer ran off the right side of the road and overturned.
Martin, on his way to the accident, hydroplaned on the wet pavement. His car ran off the right side of the roadway, hitting two mailboxes, a phone pedestal and guy wire for a power pole.
Martin was transported to the Fulton County Hospital and released the same night. Chief Deputy James Laney said Martin was not injured but a trip to the hospital is required in accidents involving officers.
Laney said Martin's vehicle was not totaled but will require some body work because of scrapes to the side and damage to the undercarriage.
Mackley received a citation for careless driving. He suffered no injuries.
Fulton County Sheriff Walter Dillinger said the heavy rain is to blame for the accidents.
