Max Earl Cates Sr., 65, of Sturkie, the only child of the late Virgil Earl Cates and Eva Mae Cates was born Jan. 19, 1941, in Sturkie, Ark. He died July 12, 2006, at the Fulton County Hospital in Salem.
He was united in marriage to Vivian Eagleman on Aug. 28, 1964 in Leota, Mo. To this union three children were born. He married Judy Coil Alexander on Oct. 29, 1992 in Horseshoe Bend. He was a 1958 graduate of West Plains High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962.
He was a longtime media figure in the area having worked as a reporter at the West Plains Daily Quill, a reporter and editor at Areawide Media, a radio announcer and television news anchor. He also served on the Salem School Board.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Cates of Oxford; his children, Jennifer D. Cates of Nashville, Tenn., Max E. Cates Jr. of Newton, Iowa, and Edward E Cates and wife, Cresta of Lafayette, Ind.; his grandchildren, Morgan Dixon and Solomon Cates, and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Robert Dixon.
The funeral services were held July 16 at the Cox-Blevins Chapel in Salem with Nathan Nixon officiating.
