OREGON COUNTY -- Independence Day celebrations in Oregon County will be held July 3 at Alton and July 4 at Thayer.

The Alton celebration is sponsored by the Alton Lions Club and will be held at Piney Creek Park.

Lions Club official Barbara Rickert said the celebration will start at 7 p.m.

She said five gospel entertainers are scheduled to perform. They are the Noel Gene Johnson family, Gene and Michelle Barton, Mike Crawford, Holly Johannson and Kelly and Pam Johnson and their daughter.

"We will be honoring and recognizing veterans the night of the Independence Day celebration," Rickert said.

She said a concession stand will be open and anyone interested in having a booth open the evening of the celebration can call her at 417-778-7783.

Rickert said the fireworks will start at dusk.

The Thayer Independence Day celebration will be held at the Thayer High School football field. Activities will get under way at 5 p.m. It is sponsored by the Thayer Chamber of Commerce and K-Kountry 95 Radio.

According to organizer Mike Crase, many booths will be at the celebration this year, including commercial and political booths. He said the local Elks Club will be bringing Elmo the Elk and Air Evac will have a helicopter on display.

The Thayer Little League will be giving away tickets to a Cardinals Baseball game, and Fun and Friends Senior Citizen Center will be selling tickets on a chance to win a patriotic quilt made by center volunteer Cindy Hughes.

Crase said Mustang Amusements will be at the celebration with carnival rides and games.

Allen American Realty will sponsor the Last Ride Band from Thayer which will perform.

"The SEMO Skydivers will be having two jumps that evening. The first jump will be at 5:30 p.m. and the second jump will be at 8:30 p.m. The second jump will include one lucky person jumping who registered with K-Kountry 95 during a remote broadcast," Crase said.

Crase said the Vacation Fest winner will be announced before fireworks start at 9:30 p.m. The winner of the vacation will get to pick from four vacation spots. They are seven days in Hawaii, an Alaskan cruise, a trip to the Caribbean or a trip for a family of four to Disney World for seven days.

He said the chamber will be giving away free cold watermelon and they will also sponsor a food food. The Spring Dipper will be selling ice cream.

Chamber of Commerce President Jim Hart is in charge of the fireworks. He said he heard many people comment that last year's show was the biggest and best ever presented at Thayer. He said he has located a new company to buy fireworks and was given a better deal on the purchase of the fireworks.

Crase said admission to the celebration is free. He said anyone who would like to reserve booth space for that evening can call him at 417-264-7211.
