THAYER -- The first phase of a two-phase project is currently underway to construct a new concession stand, restrooms, press box and locker rooms at the Thayer High School football field.
The Thayer Athletic Improvement Organization (TAIO) is working with the Thayer School Board to lease the property the land is on from the school board. The present facility has been in place since 1964.
"The TAIO is a 501 C-3 organization and was founded for this project. We have been working with the Thayer School Board for some time on this project," said TAIO spokesperson Bob Eckman. He said the leasing portion of the project should be complete by March 29.
Eckman said the organization is hoping to have the first phase of the project, which includes all facilities except the locker rooms up and running by the first football game this fall. He added that if funds allow the locker rooms might also be complete.
"By the end of this month the old concession stand should be torn down," he said.
The project is expected to cost approximately $150,000. The organization now has one-third of the needed funds to complete the new buildings.
The organization is currently raising funds to complete the project.
One of the fundraisers planned is the T. Graham Brown concert at Thayer High School March 31.
"We are asking the community to help us raise the needed funds to complete this project. Thayer Alumni Association members, businesses, individuals and the community can send a donations or volunteer any services by contacting myself at the radio station (K-Kountry 95) or Cliff Hawkins at Thayer High School," he said.
Eckman said the organization has been working closely with Howell-Oregon Electric. Spring and summer activities at the ball field will not be effected by the pending construction.
