Thayer schools pass Missouri improvement program

THAYER -- Thayer Superintendent of Schools Bill Garrison announced last week that the school has received word that it has passed the Missouri School Improvement Plan Program (MSIP) and has been accredited.

He said the news came in a letter from Stan Johnson, assistant commissioner of the MSIP.

"School districts in Missouri participate in the MSIP every five years. We did our last testing and planning last year in March," the superintendent said. Garrison said for a school district to receive accreditation it must develop and submit a comprehensive school improvement plan and show how the plan will be implemented.

The superintendent said this is the 15th year of the MSIP program and the program is in its third cycle. "At the end of each cycle the state board of education re-evaluates the different criteria the schools are expected to meet," Garrison said. The program was developed by the Missouri State School Board of Education.

Thayer Schools accrued 11 of 11 possible points on the Resource Section of the program.

The school received 38 of 38 possible points on the Process Section of the program. In the Performance Summary, the school received 82 of 100 points. Garrison said the school received 131 points overall and 82 points in performance. For a school to remain accredited in Missouri it must receive 106 points overall and at least 66 points in performance.

Garrison said in the state there are 511 accredited school districts.

He said there are 12 provisional accredited schools. He said this means the school district has two years to get the district in shape or they will become unaccredited.

"There is only one school district in Missouri that is unaccredited and that happened just this year," Garrison said.

The school district is Wellston and is located just south of St. Louis. The superintendent said when a district becomes unaccredited the district is turned over to the state and students in the district have the opportunity to go to school in another district and that school has to pay their tuition.
