Grants could benefit workers in area

Thursday, June 29, 2006

OREGON COUNTY -- The Workforce Investment Board (WIB) has grant funds to be awarded to businesses in their 12-county region in south-central Missouri, including Oregon County.

Michelle Mestas, training resource coordinator with WIB, said, "It has repeatedly been brought to our attention by businesses owners, managers and human resource departments that a large number of employees could benefit from soft skills training."

Mestas said soft skills training includes basic math, effective communication, problem solving and work ethics.

"Another obstacle in the workplace is the high percentage of employees or job seekers that do not have their high school diploma or GED. This makes advancement or employment difficult for many workers," she said. Mestas said the grant is designed to help working people with both of these issues.

She said similar programs in other parts of the country and in south-central Missouri have experienced great success in their companies.

She said no company is too big or too small to apply for the grant funds.

For more information about how a business can apply for the grant or to set up an appointment with Mestas, anyone can call her at 417-293-7146.
