It's been a long time coming for the folks of Horseshoe Bend.
Oct. 31 over a 120 Horseshoe Bend residents gathered to enjoy their first meal at the newly established senior citizens center in the Turkey Mountain Golf Course Clubhouse. "On Wednesday, our first day, we were proud of how well everything went," said Nancy Cameron who was an integral part of forming the new establishment.
Friday, Nov. 2 over 125 reservations were made to dine on a catfish lunch and others attended to play board games, talk and just enjoy the company.
The Center, as it is called, came to fruition after Cameron and Jan and Tom Taylor recognized the need for such a facility.
July 23 the group presented the idea to the community at the town "Dream Meeting," during which individuals came together to discuss the future of the Bend.
The Izard County Quorum Court and the Horseshoe Bend City Council each contributed $2,500 to get the project up and running. That, combined with money raised through various fundraisers and donations, made the dream a reality. "They've (Horseshoe Bend residents) been waiting a long time for this to happen, and there's just been so much support," Cameron said.
For now The Center is open two days a week; however, Cameron said, as The Center grows, they hope to establish a computer center, incorporate a wider variety of games, have a pool table and offer exercise classes. "We'll try to add things that interests everyone," she said.
Cameron said she was proud to be a part of the new facility. "The community and the county have been so generous. To start the project in the middle of July and have it open Oct. 31 -- that's awesome," she said.
The November menu is as follows:
Nov. 7 -- pork cutlet, scalloped corn and broccoli, green beans, wheat bread and chocolate pudding pie
Nov. 9 -- spaghetti with meat sauce, corn, salad, french bread and bread pudding
Nov. 14 -- baked chicken breast, green peas, creamed carrots, wheat bread and eggnog pound cake
Nov. 16 -- mostaccioli with meatballs, squash blend medley, tossed salad, french bread and cobbler
Nov. 21 -- turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes with gravy, cranberry sauce, green beans, roll and pumpkin pie
Nov. 23 -- closed for Thanksgiving holiday
Nov. 28 -- chili, coleslaw, applesauce, crackers and pumpkin bar
Nov. 30 -- catfish, baked potato, pinto beans, hushpuppies and peaches.
Lunch is served on Wednesday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. Those planning to attend to eat are asked to call 670-5020 to reserve their meal.
