Thieves hit HB churches again

Thursday, April 20, 2006

Two Horseshoe Bend churches and a Salem church and businesses were broken into April 11 by burglars believed to be responsible for breaking into the churches the week before.

The doors of the First Baptist Church and Faith Presbyterian Church were pried open in the same manner they had been the previous week. Perpetrators also broke into First Baptist Church in Salem and took $50, according to Fulton County Sheriff Walter Dillinger.

The file cabinets at First Baptist, from which the burglars stole money the week before, were pried open. There was no money in them this time though, according to police.

The thieves also broke into Dr. William J. Shipley's dental office. The front door of the office had tool marks where someone attempted to pry open the door. When that was unsuccessful, the burglars removed a window screen and pried the locks from the window.

The burglars took money, drugs and instruments for dental work, costing Shipley more than $250 in merchandise, according to police.

The suspects also broke into the Wholesale Warehouse. No merchandise was stolen, but the doors were damaged, authorities said.

There were also attempts to break into the New Haven Baptist Church near Ash Flat and in the Salem offices of Areawide Media. The News Publisher Janie Flynn said the burglars damaged a back door in their attempt to get in and that the locks to the door had to be replaced.

Police said they think the suspects are responsible for the string of April 3 burglaries in Horseshoe Bend.

Karen's Kitchen, as well as most of the churches in Horseshoe Bend, were broken into. Nothing was stolen from Karen's Kitchen, but the churches reported money and other valuables had been stolen.

The case remains under investigation. "We've got some ideas," Horseshoe Bend Police Lt. Carl Bowles said.

A $3,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Horseshoe Bend Police Department at 870-670-5113 or the Fulton County Sheriffs Department at 870-895-2601.
