Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife officer Cpl. Brian A. Gaskins of Mammoth Spring has been named the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Game and Fish Litter Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for 2005.
Gaskins received a framed certificate of recognition from Keep Arkansas Beautiful at the July 15 Wildlife Officers Association banquet.
A panel of AGFC wildlife officers and Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commissioner Randy Frazier of Wye Mountain chose this year's Litter Law Enforcement Officer.
Gaskins was chosen because of his extraordinary leadership in enforcing Arkansas' litter law. In addition to issuing citations for litter violations, Gaskins was instrumental in placing stickers in canoes and kayaks reminding users that littering Arkansas' waterway is illegal and placing banners with the same message along the float route.
In fact, due to Gaskins' efforts, every canoe and kayak outfitter along the upper Spring River now sports these stickers in their rental vessels, and Gaskins secured the necessary funding for the stickers to be distributed statewide. Gaskins' efforts resulted in a noticeable decrease from last year to this year of littering violations observed along the Spring River.
Game and Fish wildlife officers Brian Aston of Craighead County, David Wilson of Crawford County, Pat Fitts of Ashley County and Phillip Abernathy of Polk County received Award of Excellence certificates from Keep Arkansas Beautiful commending them for their service to litter law enforcement in 2005.
"The Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission have long shared a passion to protect the state's natural scenic beauty," said Robert Phelps, director of Keep Arkansas Beautiful. "We are proud to recognize wildlife officers who are diligently enforcing the state's litter laws. Their outstanding efforts toward education and enforcement are key components in changing behaviors and curbing the litter habit."
