Denzel R. Winstead, 95, of Hot Springs, formerly of Hardy, Ark., died July 17, 2005 at his home in Hot Springs.
He was born March 10, 1910, in Hardy, Ark., the son of William Pifer and Kate Elkins Winstead.
He was a member of Fairdale Baptist Church, chief carpenter mate in World War II Navy "Seabees" 64th Battalion; worked at Oaklawn Race Track for 39 years and was self-employed at Smith Brothers Construction Co.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Winstead of Hot Springs; one daughter and son-in-law -- Nancy and Roy McFarland of Jefferson, Texas, son and daughter-in-law -- Bazel and Betti Winstead of Hot Springs; grandsons and their wives -- Rick and Cathy McFarland of San Antonio, Texas, Steve and Linda McFarland of Jefferson, Texas, Burt McFarland of Dallas, Texas, Sean Page of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Jim Winstead of Hot Springs, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers -- Capt Leonard Winstead, Willard Winstead and Owen Winstead.
The funeral service was July 20 at Gross Funeral Home Chapel with Tim Carpenter officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Gross Funeral Home.
Burial was in Memorial Gardens in Hot Springs with full military honors by Thaddeus H. Caraway Post 2278 Honor Guard.
Pallbearers were Rick McFarland, Steve McFarland, Burt McFarland, Jim Winstead, Tristan Gaulden and Nick Gaulden.
