Shirley Armstead, daughter of Zara Sutherland and the late Homer Blevins, was born Oct. 25, 1935, in Saddle, Ark. She was raised by her mother and the late Vick Jones.
She died Feb. 24, 2006, at White River Medical Center in Batesville at the age of 70.
She was united in marriage to George Benson Armstead on Aug. 27, 1955, in Alton, Mo. To this union six children were born. She worked with her husband for 35 years in the sawmill operation and on the farm. She was a member of the Assembly of God.
Survivors include her children, Mary (Gene) Nelson of Waynesville, Mo., Martha Williams of Sidney, George (LaVerne) Armstead of Mammoth Spring, Melba Armstead of Mankato, Minn., John (Brenda) Armstead of Thayer, and Marshall Armstead of Agnos; her mother, Zara Jones of Thayer; grandchildren, Joseph Nelson, Michael and Phillip Hodges, Amanda Williams, LaShelle Neely, Chistina and George Armstead, Victoria Boatman, Derek, Rachel and Benson Armstead; great-grandchildren, Jayden, Elijah, Jason and Nathaniel; brothers and sisters, Ernest Jones of Saddle, Fannie Higginbottom of Las Vegas, Douglas Jones of Saddle, Dixie Jones of West Plains, Doris Brown of Thayer, Ronald Jones of California, and Michael Jones of Oklahoma; and special friend, Calvin Young of Mammoth Spring.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her father and stepfather; brothers, R.A., and Wesley Jones; a sister, Imogene Ward; and a granddaughter, Alis Roselind Nelson.
The funeral services were held Feb. 28 at Saddle Baptist Church in Saddle, Ark., with Ira Brokaw officiating. Burial followed in the Saddle Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem.
Pallbearers included Michael Jones, George A. Armstead, Derek Armstead, Phillip Hodges, Terry Walker and Scott Holloway.
