Wrecks claim two lives

Thursday, February 9, 2006

Evening Shade and Ravenden men die in separate wrecks

A two-vehicle wreck on Highway 63 just outside of Hardy Feb. 5 killed a Ravenden man.

Gregory W. Rainwater, 49, of Ravenden was southbound in a 1995 Dodge pickup on Highway 63 when he crossed the center line and struck a 2005 Chevrolet pickup head on, said Cpl. Phillip Pickett with the Arkansas State Police. The wreck occurred around 9:30 p.m.

"I don't know why he crossed the line. He just went left of the center and hit her," Pickett said.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Stephanie D. Byrley, 19, of Maynard, was transported to the former Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System and then airlifted to St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Mo.

Byrley underwent surgery on her left elbow Feb. 6, a family member said. She suffered burns on her face from the airbag and bruising from the seatbelt. She is in good condition and was expected to be released Feb. 7.

It is unknown if Rainwater was wearing his seatbelt. There were no passengers in either vehicle. The road conditions were dry, Pickett said.

An Evening Shade man died in a one-vehicle accident that also injured two passengers late at night on Feb. 4 in Horseshoe Bend.

Jeffrey Koch, 30, was killed when he lost control of his 2001 Ford Explorer while traveling on a gravel road south of Diamond Lake Dam and rolled 125 feet down the embankment, according to authorities. Horseshoe Bend Police Chief Fred Mitchell said Koch died of injuries to the neck.

Passenger Steven Dobbs, 36, of Hardy was transported by Air Evac to White River Medical Center in Batesville. The other passenger Jeremy Porter, 25, of Cave City had head injuries, Mitchell said.

Porter, was transported to Fulton County Hospital.

The accident is being investigated by Horseshoe Bend Sgt. Sonny Gerringer.
