Longhorns tripped up by Rebels in overtime

Friday, November 24, 2006

It took an extra frame, but the Highland Rebels managed to slip past the homestanding Viola Longhorns 63-61 in overtime Nov. 17 at the Longhorn Corral in Viola.

Earlier in the evening, the Lady Rebs knocked off the Lady Longhorns 49-41 to make it a sweep for the visitors from Highland.

Cody Seward took his time, stepped to an opening, and nailed a 3-point shot to tie the game with Viola 56-all at the end of regulation.

In overtime, the Longhorns missed two free throws, while the Rebels missed just one, and that was enough to give Highland a season opening 63-62 win over Viola (4-4).

Highland's Preston King was perfect at the line for the night hitting eight free throws, including four in the extra period.

It was a tight, turnover-laden game throughout with the Rebels leading by no more then five points at the end of the first three quarters.

Viola's Kasey Humphries hit five 3-pointers on the night, with three of them coming in the fourth quarter to push the Longhorns into the lead.

The Rebels' Adam Wulff was enjoying a productive game with 15 points in the paint before fouling out in the fourth period.

King lead the Rebels with 29 points, including five 3s, followed by Wulff's 15 points. Seward contributed nine points.

Humphries led the Longhorns with 24 points, and Lucas Rains added 17. Jeremiah Johnson gave Viola 13 points and was seven-of-eight from the free throw line.

The Lady Rebels had to overcome some sloppy play and foul trouble in order to beat the experienced Lady Longhorns by eight points.

Highland was up 13-12 after the first quarter and 28-23 at the half.

Viola wasn't able to take advantage of the Lady Rebs' sloppy play, as the Lady Horns only hit 12 of 28 free throws in game, and went nine-of-17 in the first half.

Courtney Sublett led the Lady Rebels with 15 points, three steals and two assists. Keri Kalmus had eight points, three rebounds and three steals. Kayla Evans added nine points for Highland.

Micah Thompson had 18 points for the Lady Longhorns, followed by Chasidy Hutson with 14.

The Lady Longhorns started their week in fine fashion with a 41-13 win over Evening Shade in 1A-2 North play Nov. 14.

Micah Thompson paved the way with a game-high 18 points, while Mikita Thompson and Lindsey Newton added six points each. Elizabeth Collins and Kristen Montgomery hit for four points apiece, with Hutson logging three.

Rebecca Kennedy paced Evening Shade with seven points. Keri Rogers, Cassie Huckabee and Jessica Royal tallied two points each for the Lady Tigers.
