Shady Oaks gets new administrator

Thursday, November 10, 2005

THAYER -- The residents and employees of Shady Oaks Healthcare and Rehab in Thayer will have a new administrator as of Nov. 15. David Medley, who has been the administrator at the facility the past 15 months, has resigned, taking a position with another company.

Janie Walters, a 26-year employee of Shady Oaks, will take over the position of administrator at the nursing facility.

Shady Oaks is familiar to Walters. She began her employment there in the activity department. She has also worked in the social service department, medical supply, medical records, and as assistant office manager and the last two years as office manager.

Walters has seen a lot of changes in the nursing and rehab profession in her 26 years at Shady Oaks. She said most of the changes have to do with Medicare and Medicaid.

"No matter what changes they make, our goal at Shady Oaks remains the same. That is to provide the best care possible for the residents that live at Shady Oaks," Walters said.

"We have a lot of long term employees that have worked here for many years and we are proud of that," she said.

Walters is a graduate of Alton High School. She and her husband Charlie moved to Thayer in 1973 after he got out of the service. Charlie has worked for the railroad for 34 years.

The couple has three children, Shelly and her husband Galen; David and his wife Kista, and their youngest son, Dustin, who still lives at home. They also have four grandchildren.

In a way, Walters is following in her mother's footsteps. Her mother, Neta Clinton, served as administrator at Shady Oaks for a dozen years. Clinton worked at the facility 33 years, starting as a nurses' aide.

"We invite anyone in the community to come by and take a tour of our facility at any time," Walters said.
