Fueled by a game-high 27 points and 11 boards from Spencer Caraway, the Izard County Cougars picked up a big non-conference road win Jan. 29, topping the Shirley Blue Devils 59-56.
The Cougars trailed 18-15 after the first quarter but outscored the Blue Devils, 19-10, in the second quarter to take a 34-28 lead at the half. The game was close throughout the second half, but the Cougars were 11-14 from the foul line to hold off the Blue Devils.
Kyle McCandlis added 11 points and six rebounds for the Cougars, and Curtis Clark and Steven Walker contributed eight and six points, respectively. Scott Small chipped in four points, and Chase Massey had three points and five assists. Steven Ciles led Shirley with 18 points.
The Cougars improved to 26-5 with the win, and Shirley dropped to 15-13.
The Junior Cougars broke open a tight game with a 22-4 run in the third quarter and went on to defeat the Junior Blue Devils, 39-18.
Josh Ball led the Junior Cougars with 13 points, and Ryan Walker chipped in six points and six rebounds. Trenton Hatman scored six points, and Caleb Cowan had four points. Preston Harmon contributed three points, and Jed Yarnell, Kyle King and Jordan Everett had two points each. Chris King scored one point, and Izzac Smith garnered five rebounds and Caleb Blevins pulled down four rebounds.
The Junior Cougars are now 10-11 on the season.
The Lady Cougars dropped a 31-28 decision to the Lady Blue Devils to fall to 10-15 on the season.
Karessa Campbell led the Lady Cougars with 16 points and nine rebounds. Traci Grinnell added six points, and Leathyr Spangler chipped in four points. Haley Crotts scored two points and had four blocks, and Lane Norvold pulled down six rebounds.
