Hernandez pleads guilty to vehicular assault charges

ALTON -- An Alton man, Martelo Hernandez, was transported to state prison in Bonn Terre by officers with the Oregon County Sheriff's Department Jan. 4.

Hernandez, 28, pleaded guilty in Oregon County Circuit Court Jan. 3 to a charge of vehicular assault. Thirty Seventh Judicial Circuit Judge Richard Moore of West Plains sentenced him to one year in prison.

On March 12, 2004, a Dodge Caravan driven by Hernandez, who was intoxicated at the time, crossed the center line of Highway 63, two miles north of Oregon County Road 364 near Koshkonong and struck a Mitubishi Montero head-on. In the car were Brock Miller, Jeffrey Miller, Kody Miller, Melody Miller and Logan Miller, all of West Plains. All five of the occupants of the Miller vehicle were injured and taken to Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains.

Two Thayer teens, Brittany Allen and Heather Coffell, were in a third vehicle involved in the accident. Allen and Coffell were also taken to OMC where they were treated for minor injuries. Hernandez was also taken to OMC and treated for injuries he received in the accident and released.
