Ozark Action raising funds

Thursday, July 7, 2005

OREGON COUNTY -- Ozark Action (OA) is now raising funds to purchase necessary school supplies for low-income children in Oregon County for the upcoming school year.

OA spokesperson Paula Miller said the Oregon County Back to School Fair is a community event that promotes the health and well being of Oregon County residents. "

The Back to School Fair is an annual event currently in its sixth year. It is a community exhibition of agencies that currently provide services to citizens of Oregon County. It is held each year to provide the basic needs for educational support, including but not limited to health screenings, school supplies and supportive services. The target group is low-income families who are unable to address the basic needs due to lack of income," Miller said.

Oregon County has four school districts, Alton, Couch, Koshkonong and Thayer. Miller said each year students registered for school in the districts are required to provide a portion of their educational tools. "Due to cuts in state funding, schools are now requesting families to provide more of the school necessities, and low-income families often struggle or are unable to purchase the supplies," Miller said. She said the students who do not have the required school supplies often suffer embarrassment and low self esteem.

"With community support through volunteers and financial support, this project helps to build strong, healthy, educated, productive citizens of tomorrow while helping poverty stricken families in their struggle to be self sufficient." Miller said.

She said anyone who would like to make a difference in a child's life by donating to the project or anyone who would like to register a child for the fair can call he at 417-778-7470. She said more details of the fair will be announced at a later date.
