Nelmarie Marney Ellison Gaborik was born in Rocky Comfort, Mo., on Sept. 18, 1924, to Bert and Cooie Marney. She had one brother, Champ Clark Marney and two sisters, Marietta and Virginia Lee. Virginia Lee Mohlman now resides with her husband, Dusty, in Camp, Ark.
She was active in many community groups and served on the city council in the 1970s.
She hosted a bed and breakfast in "The Carr House" and also ran the license bureau for several years with her friend, Tommy Humphrey.
She fed hobos, took in strays and volunteered for many fundraisers.
She loved to garden and play bridge, was an excellent cook, a wonderful mother and friend and wanted to be remembered as one of the compassionate conservatives.
She passed away peacefully with her family on Dec. 3, 2005, in Kansas City.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Dr. John Ellison in 1965 and Frank Gaborik in 2005. She and Dr. Ellison moved to Thayer in 1947. Their first daughter, Elizabeth Eugenia Dowling, now lives with her husband, Michael, in San Francisco and their younger daughter, Rebecca Lee, lives with her husband in Kansas City, Mo.
