MYRTLE -- More than 5,200 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members, advisors, alumni and guests from across the country gathered in San Diego, Calif., recently for the 2005 FCCLA National Leadership meeting.

Three Couch High School FCCLA members attended the conference. They were: Courtney Sanders, daughter of Allen Sanders of Couch and Linda Sanders of West Plains; Darron Combs, son Ron and Darlene Combs of Thayer; and Bjorn Wilkerson, son of Mike Wilkerson of Myrtle and Marit Wilkerson of West Plains.

"The national meeting centered on the student-developed theme, 'Sixty Years Strong -- Where You Belong,'" said Couch FCCLA Advisor Teresa Holder. She said this theme encourages members to celebrate FCCLA's history and build a successful future by exploring career options, addressing community needs and focusing on family relationships.

"During the five-day meeting participants examined many of the issues facing youth such as teen pregnancy and underage drinking and driving," Holder said.

The advisor who accompanied the students to the conference said the FCCLA members worked toward gaining life skills they need to meet those challenges.
