Focus families sought

Thursday, September 1, 2005

ALTON -- The Region Eight Disability Council of the Ozarks is seeking Oregon County families to take part in a focus group Sept. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the conference room at the Oregon County Courthouse.

"If you are a parent of a child with a developmental disability or an adult with a developmental disability, we need you at this meeting," said Carol Childress who is in charge of the meeting. She reminds those who plan to attend that the term developmental disability means any long term condition that slows down or limits mental or physical development.

"These are developmental disabilities that interfere with self-care, communication, learning, mobility, decision making, financial self reliance and independent living," Childress said.

Childress said the focus groups are being held to learn more about the difficulties people with these disabilities and their families face when trying to get help from the state of Missouri.

"The group will spotlight the services needed in Oregon County and help plan where $1.3 million received yearly by the Missouri Planning Council will be spent. By taking park in the focus group, the rural areas of the Ozarks can speak out for the services they need," Childress said.

She said all ideas and suggestions are needed.

Anyone willing to take part in the focus group can contact Childress at 888-646-6065.
