Black Gold festival next weekend

Thursday, September 27, 2007

ALTON -- The 22nd annual Black Gold Walnut Festival will be held Oct. 5 and 6.

The festival is sponsored annually by the Alton Chamber of Commerce and will be held on Alton's historic town square.

"Last year's response was overwhelmingly positive with the festival back on the square, so we are keeping it there," said Alton Chamber of Commerce President Jan Shields.

The festival will begin Oct. 5 with a barbecue supper complete with all the fixings starting at 5:30 p.m. Shields said entertainment will be provided by Country Connection. Anyone planning to attend needs to bring a lawn chair. The barbecue suppers are $5 a plate with children under six eating free.

Shields said the chamber is donating half of this years proceeds from the supper to the Oregon County Christos House Outreach Center at Alton.

Vendors will take over the square Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., along with craft and food booths.

Mustang Amusements will have rides for the children and there is entertainment planned throughout the day.

Shields said some of the activities include a pie eating contest, pumpkin carving, best decorated booth and the most original hand crafted walnut item.

She said booth space is filling up fast. For more information call her at 417-778-7373 or Sherry Fohey at 417-778-1773.
