MAMMOTH SPRING - School Board elections were held across Arkansas Sept. 18.
The Mammoth Spring School District had one position on the ballot. Incumbent Ramona Combs faced newcomer Jamie Turnbough. Turnbough defeated Combs 164 votes to 93 votes.
Mammoth Spring School Superintendent Ron Taylor said Combs has served on the school board five years and has been an asset to the school.
"The patrons of the Mammoth Spring School District are fortunate to have had two candidates of such caliber on the ballot. Jamie is a wonderful young man and we are looking forward to working with him on the school board," Taylor said.
Turnbough is a 1996 graduate of Mammoth Spring High School. He and his wife, Kristin, have one daughter, Avery, a second grader at Mammoth Spring Elementary School.
He has worked as a police officer for the city of Mammoth Spring the past eight years.
Turnbough said he is looking forward to serving on the school board.
"I want to give back to my community, to do my part. I think every parent of a school age child should be involved in the school," he said.
"I have a daughter that attends that school. All parents should be involved in their children's education," he said.
Turnbough said although Mammoth Spring is a small district it is a great school. "There are a lot of really great teachers at Mammoth Spring. Because our school is smaller it allows the teachers to give a lot of one-on-one instruction. There are teachers here that care," he said.
Turnbough said that through his job as a police officer he has dealt with the administration at the school and they have always gone above and beyond the call of duty.
"I look forward to serving the community and working with the other school board members and parents. I thank all the voters for their support and will try to do the best job I can for the school and community," he said.
Other school board members include Donell Russell, Devin Smoot, John Walsh and Mark Cooper.
The next meeting of the Mammoth Spring School Board will be Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the board meeting room. The annual report to the public will follow at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
