Joseph S. Mitchell, 90, of Pensacola, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007.
Mitchell was a native of Thayer, Mo., but had been a resident of Pensacola for the past 50 years.
He was of the Assembly of God Faith.
Mitchell joined the Navy in 1936 and served during World War II and the Korean Conflict retiring in 1959 after 23 years service. He served aboard the USS Dent, 116.
Mr. Mitchell was the son of George Washington and Cora Young Mitchell.
Survivors include: his wife, Karen Mitchell; a son, Larry Mitchell and his friend Cindy Baruman; two grandsons, Paul Archer and Joey Mitchell; a sister and brother-in-law, Daisy Mae and Ray Whiteside; nieces and nephews, Dotsie Prichard, Charles Jr. Sinclair, Donna Fink (Doyle), Kay Bible (Larry), Terri Hull (Danny); two great nieces and a great nephew; friends, Mark Ramos, Susie, Mike and Terry Thompson, Rick Traylor and Granny Hightower.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; a brother, James Edward Mitchell; a sister, Amanda Louise Sinclair and his first wife, Leora Barto Mitchell.
Services with full military honors were held Sept. 25, at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, with Hospice Chaplain Jack officiating.
