Hanford Waymon England, school superintendent, died Nov. 23, 2005, in Springfield, Mo., at the age of 91.
He was born June 28, 1914, in Elm Springs, Ark., the son of Marion Nixon and Dora Hall England.
He was married in Salem, Ark., on June14, 1936, to Mary June Payne.
He was of the Baptist faith and had been a member of the Thayer First Baptist Church for many years.
He was an educator who began his career in 1936, teaching in a one room school in Ripley County, Mo., where he swept the floors and stoked fires in the wood stove for $90 a year. He obtained his undergraduate degree from ASU in 1947 and his master's degree in 1953 from Old Miss at Oxford. He went on to become a school superintendent, basketball coach and educator in Oregon County where he retired in 1974.
Following his career in education he first worked for Thayer and Alton Senior Citizens Housing and sold real estate for Century 21 of Thayer, where he earned the prestigious million dollar club award, finally retiring for the third time in 1996.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary Yarber of Fair Grove, Mo.; grandchildren, Claudia Delgado of Hutchinson, Kan., Bubba Shaw and wife, Angie, of Thayer, Sarah Habiger and husband, Tom, of Springfield and Laura Banks and husband, Mike, of Waynesville, Mo.; eight great-grandchildren; four brothers, Gordon and wife, Bertha, of Myrtle, Walter and wife, Louise, of Beebe, Noah and wife, Wanda, of Thayer and Dan and wife, Janie, of Waldo; one sister, Lula Lamere and husband, Albert, of Alton, Ill.; one brother-in-law, Eugene James and wife, Mary Lou, of West Plains; many nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, his son-in-law, Gary E. Yarber; two brothers, David and Clifford England; and one sister. Ella James.
Pallbearers were Bubba Shaw, Tom Habiger, Mike Banks, Greg England, Danny James and Ryan James.
Burial was in the Thayer Cemetery with Bro. Bill Bales officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of the Carter Funeral Home Inc. of Thayer, Mo.
