ICC school board accepts Stephens bid

Izard County Consolidated School Board met in a regular business session on Nov. 9 in the high school board room.

The board accepted the low bid of 4.12 percent from Stephens Inc. for the district's recent second lien bond issue. Superintendent Fred Walker told the board he is applying for state transitional facility funds on the current building projects and the agriculture barn that, if approved, will result in the state paying a portion of the district's debt on these projects.

The board agreed to change spring break to April 3-7 in the district's school calendar due to the state's revised testing schedule.

Walker announced that the district's first quarter average enrollment was 546, an increase of 42 students from last year.

Walker announced that Colton Selph showed the grand champion Brangus heifer and Molly Taylor showed the reserve champion Red Angus Bull at the Arkansas State Fair. Tyler Owens, Lester Greenhaw and Josh Wynne all showed cattle that placed in their respective divisions and Owens, Greenhaw, Wynne and Jessica Perkins showed market goats at the State Fair. Wayne Neal is the FFA sponsor.

High School Principal David Harmon praised the cross country teams that competed at the state tournament Nov. 5 in Hot Springs. Harmon said the boys' team placed fifth and the girls' team was seventh. James Morgan finished third and was named all-state for the second consecutive year, and Steven Walker placed 18th out of 109 runners. Heather Stefka also placed 18th out of 118 runners in the girls division. Other ICC participants were Zac DeSanto, Robert Pitcher, Kyle McCandlis, Dustin Noblin, Melissa Martin, Leathyr Spangle, Sammi Fowler, Montana Guthrie, Tina Gerringer and Lane Norvold. Stan Fowler is the cross country coach.

Harmon announced that Eric Morgan had been elected District 2 FCCLA treasurer and will represent 63 high schools in north central Arkansas. Christie Haney is the FCCLA sponsor. Also, Harmon announced that Michael Martin won the Class C division of the November Smash Adult Chess Tournament in Batesville Nov. 5. Also participating were Tyler Wallis, Randy Sutton and Seth Hall. Kendall Wallis is the chess coach.

Walker reported on the current building projects. He said the elementary library and classroom project, the middle school classroom addition and the fine arts complex are all progressing on schedule.
