The plea was accepted Oct. 3 in Alton before 37th Judicial Circuit Judge R. Jack Garrett. Vanmeter was transferred to prison in Bonne Terre Nov. 8.
The charges stem from incidents that occurred between September of last year and March of this year involving a 7-year-old girl.
The girl had told investigators that Vanmeter had touched her inappropriately while at her grandmother's house. She said she would go to his home and play video games and the same thing would happen there. She told investigators this had happened "lots of times."
During an interview with investigators March 9 Vanmeter said he had took the girl fishing in January and February and admitted to touching her through her clothes. He told the officers she had slapped his hand and told him to stop. He said he had done the same thing at his home and at the girl's grandmother's home.
After meeting with investigators Vanmeter wrote a letter to Oregon County Prosecuting Attorney Fred O'Neill saying he needed help to keep from abusing young girls.
This is not the first time Vanmeter has been in trouble for sexual abuse of minors. He had been convicted in Iowa of second- and third-degree sex abuse of a child less than 14 years old.
He first registered as a sex offender in Oregon County July 27, 2004.
