ALTON -- An Alton man, Elven Simmons, has been charged with assault and is in the Oregon County jail at Alton with bond set at $100,000.
Law enforcement officers said Simmons, 48, used a stick or shovel handle to cause injury to Jeremy Kirksey Nov. 6. The incident took place on County Road 100 near Alton.
Oregon County Deputy Randy Vator was dispatched to the location where Kirksey was staying and found him bleeding from a cut on his forehead. Kirksey told Vator that Simmons was the assailant. Kirksey was flown to a Springfield hospital where he was treated and released.
Alton Police Chief Rusty Warren and Oregon County Sheriff Tim Ward assisted Vator in getting statements of what happened from three witnesses. They all said they saw Simmons come to the driveway at County Road 100, out of a vehicle and hit Kirksey, a report from the sheriff's office said.
Simmons said Kirksey came toward him with a rock, so he hit him with a stick, according to Vator.
