With warmer, dryer weather this week, drivers took advantage and a good field was present at West Plains Motor Speedway April 5, as the season-opener sponsored by Barlow Expedited Service and Best Western Grand Villa actually took place. Last weekend's rain left drivers and fans disappointed when the event had to be called before it ever started.
But this week saw 25 modified drivers take the green and run flag-to-flag without a single caution. Emerging as feature winner was Shawn Walsh of Ash Flat, who started eighth and worked his way through the field, taking the lead on lap 18 and cruising right to Victory Lane.
Brandon Ball of West Plains had to settle for second, followed by Joey Smith of Pomona, Chris Piper of West Plains, Rustin Miller of Houston, Jason Brigman and Matt Barry, both of West Plains, Jason Snodgrass of Mountain Home, Ben Ledgerwood of Birch Tree and Calvin Tribble of West Plains.
Jeff North of Rogersville, Mo., put his first feature win of the season in the Super Stock record book, and he was followed by Derald Kelly of Birch Tree, Stan Ellison, Kevin Collins and Bobby Bryant, all of West Plains, Darren Fox of Mountain Grove, Andy Collins of West Plains, Bruce Sutterfield of Bono, Will Love of Batesville and Carmon Vincent.
The Hobby Stock feature winner was Robert Williams of Van Buren, followed by Mike Elliott of Ellsinore, Mo., Dexter Frost and John Stiner, both of West Plains, and Shane Hitt of Birch Tree.
Clifford Collins II, of West Plains, won the Cruiser feature, followed by Doug Lambert, Rhonda Gunter, John Zuchowski and Bill Harden, all of West Plains, Tyler Newcom of Hardy and Mark Doiron of West Plains.
The Youth Hobby Stock class had six drivers registered, but only four got to run the feature event, as two were sidelined with mechanical problems. Taking the feature win was last year's champion, Ben Piper of West Plains, followed by Kyle Duke and Dakota Frost, both of West Plains, and Kevin May of Pomona.
April 12 will see the Fastrack Late Model travelling series making their first appearance at West Plains Motor Speedway. Sponsoring the event will be Dillard-Fowlkes Motor Co., of Ash Flat.
A full points program for the weekly classes will also be on tap for the evening.
Gates will open at 5 p.m., with hotlaps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m. Adult admission for this special event will be $15; kids 7-11 $3, and those 6-and-under are always free. Pit passes will be $30.
